Bitten by the bug

Do you remember when you first got the family history bug? Soon you were sifting through hints and staying up till 1am to discover your family.

My first memory of an interest in my ancestors was during a car ride to a family get together. I was in my early teens when dad mentioned in conversation his family were from a farm near Kempsey. Kempsey? But isn’t the family from Sydney? How did my family have a farm? Dad didn’t have the answers and it took another 20 years before I had the time and the resources to find out.

In the 90’s my sister headed to London for an extended holiday and whilst there spent some time at the archives searching indexes. It was the only way to do it back then, piece together the family microfiche by microfiche.

And then Ancestry came along. I signed up in 2008, entered the family I knew, and within minutes hints popped up. What followed was years of late nights, early mornings, major mistakes, amazing discoveries and lots of research across numerous websites.

What I have learnt is to never add another person’s tree without checking everything and to get out of the lounge and off the computer to find external sources not available online.

The journey continues and this blog will cover all the fun and discovery.
